25 years on, Sydenhams Timber Engineering looks to a timber-built future for UK construction

This year marks 25 years of operation for Sydenhams Timber Engineering, and a pivotal moment for the wider construction sector as timber frame moves from the margins to the mainstream.

Since the year 2000, the company has supplied structural timber systems for more than 4,000 buildings across the UK; spanning housing developments, schools, healthcare facilities, hotels and self-build projects. Today, with a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Wickham and a dedicated engineering centre on the Isle of Wight, its focus is firmly on what comes next: helping the industry build low-carbon, high-performance structures at scale.

Dean Orchard, Managing Director, explains:

“We’ve seen a huge shift in the way the industry views timber. It’s no longer an alternative material, it’s becoming central to how the UK can achieve its carbon targets. As we celebrate 25 years, our goal is to keep pushing that transition forward, through innovation, design excellence and collaboration.”

That innovation includes the company’s Biogenic Twin Wall System, the first of its kind in the UK, which uses natural, low-carbon materials such as UK-grown timber and hemp insulation. The system enables buildings that align with Passive House principles, delivering outstanding thermal performance and embodied carbon reduction.

Supported by the Sydenhams Group, Sydenhams Timber Engineering works with developers, housing associations, and architects who share its belief that timber frame buildings are key to a more sustainable construction future.

“Timber frame construction offers speed, strength, and carbon sequestration,” Dean added. “It’s one of the few methods that can genuinely help the sector build better and build greener: now, not decades from now.”

As it marks its 25th anniversary, Sydenhams Timber Engineering continues to invest in the people, technologies and partnerships that will shape the next generation of sustainable buildings.
